About Highlands

There are as many different types of livery yards as there are breeds of horses and so I wanted to tell you a little about Highlands Farm Stables.
This small family run yard is in a beautiful court yard setting and has been running for around ten years.
I live on site in a converted barn that used to also contain stables. As my life is so closely connected to the yard the aim is for it to have a friendly, organised and community feel.
The primary goal is to have quality horses and liveries, who enjoy and support each other. Competing in local shows in dressage , show jumping and pony club, there is a really positive professional environment – where we want to get the best out of our horses, but with a low key supportive vibe.
Customers often become friends and typically stay for years, only leaving when major life changes like long distance house moves or babies come along! Its a business in the sense that we aim to cover costs, but the most important thing is having the right mix of horses, riders and staff.
The horses have a regular routine, turnout every morning and bring in at 4pm ish. In the summer there is a mix of day or evening turnout depending on what suits each horse. Paddocks are rested on a rotation basis and put out in small groups of 3-4 mares and gelding separately. Extra services are available as needed/requested.
As it’s a family yard there is a real mix of people and horses – two quality show jumpers,  a youngster who is being brought on and two teenagers who compete for mid surrey pony club. I also have a couple of horses, one a youngster and another who Rona competes with at dressage.
My younger daughter has Billy, who everyone adores. I think its a great combination and we often meet to have a glass of wine in the garden, comparing notes and having horsey chats.
Sometimes people ask me why I have a yard so close to my house and I say “its a bit like the Walton’s mixed with Grand Designs and horse and hound – Friendly, modern, professional and passionate horseness all mixed together”. Its a great combination!
Hope to see you here soon.
